The North Carolina Breast Cancer Early Detection Network (NCBCED Network) is a group of individuals and organizations across the state focused on education and advocacy around the early detection of breast cancer in women with dense breasts. We are empowering women and families with information and advocating for state legislation to require insurance coverage for all breast cancer screening needed for early detection.

Why Early Screening for Women with Dense Breasts

The denser a woman’s breasts, the higher her risk is for developing breast cancer. Dense breasts also make it less likely that a mammogram alone will detect breast cancer, which is highly curable when detected early.

Dense breast tissue affects nearly 50% of U.S. women. These same women are at a higher risk for cancer since dense breast tissue complicates early detection. Mammograms alone miss about half of these cancers. Additional screening methods exist; however, they are often not covered by insurance.

Thrity-eight states require insurers to reimburse for these crucial screenings. North Carolina does not. That’s why we are advocating for state legislation to expand insurance coverage for breast imaging
