What is Breast Density
Breast density refers to the glands and fibrous tissue a woman has relative to fat. The MORE glands and fibrous tissue a woman has, the denser her breasts are.
Why Density Matters
Women with dense breasts have a higher likelihood of developing breast cancer. In fact, women with extremely dense breasts are 4 to 6X more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Mammograms alone miss about HALF of cancers. Additional screening methods exist but often lack insurance coverage.
- One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
- 71% of breast cancers occur in women with dense breasts.
- 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family history.
- Detection Challenges: Because both dense tissue and cancer appear white on a mammogram, making it harder to identify tumors in women with dense breasts.
